Day of the Seafarer

The Day of the Seafarer is an annual observance recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on June 25th, although celebrations often extend over multiple days. The 2023 campaign theme is Oceans Worth Protecting . Seafarers across the world are asked to share a picture of their marine environment on social media using the hashtag #OceansWorthProtecting. The wider public can take part in the campaign by sharing photos of the marine environment that they think is worth protecting using the hashtag and by sharing pictures on their social platforms.

Seafarers’ House will also honor the day by recognizing seafarers, the force that keeps the world moving. To thank seafarers for their hard work, Father Sandy, with support of volunteers and our pastoral team, will deliver goodie bags, games, and treats to mariners working on ships docked in Port Everglades throughout the weekend. These visits and gift bags bring joy and entertainment to the seafarers and also acknowledge the challenges they face being away from their families and loved ones for extended periods.

We aim to highlight the importance of the seafaring profession and recognize the sacrifices made by seafarers who play a crucial role in global trade and commerce.
