Thousands of miles from home with months to go on his employment contract, Alex logged onto Skype at Seafarers’ House to speak with his wife and children continents away. Immediately, he could tell something was wrong. His wife broke the news to him that a cherished loved one had passed. Alex broke down crying, shocked and grieving thousands of miles away from home and his loved ones.
Working his 5th year-long contract, Darwin excitedly logged onto Seafarers’ House free Wi-Fi to check his email. He was anxious to see his daughter’s first day of school pictures. Instead, he found a video message from her, singing a song and sending him a hug from home. He smiled through the tears the video brought to his eyes and quickly called our Pastor Steve over to see the video.
The seafarers who come to Port Everglades, thousands of miles from their homes, are fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters. For them, the Internet is both a blessing and a curse, for seafarers often return to their vessels full of emotions that news from home has brought. Thankfully, with support from donors like you, both Alex and Darwin found comfort through the support of our chaplaincy team, allowing them to return to their vessels calm and focused.
You make it possible for Seafarers’ House to welcome and assist the tens of thousands of seafarers who come to us each year, providing them with pastoral care, support, and a place to relax and refocus.
Whether you give $100 or $1,000, your contribution ensures that mariners will continue to receive the kind of comfort Alex and Darwin received when they arrived at Seafarers’ House. And never forget a seafarer at peace drives a safer ship.
