Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades is pleased to announce it was named a recipient of a $3,620 MLK Day-of-Service Award to assist with its annual Shoebox Christmas program.
Each year during the holiday season, Seafarers’ House volunteers wrap, fill and deliver more than 1,500 shoeboxes containing toiletries and other necessities to mariners aboard ships that dock at Port Everglades.
As part of this project, a group of volunteers will gather at Seafarers’ House on Jan. 15, 2018 – Martin Luther King Day – to wrap and fill 300 shoeboxes to get a head start on the 2018 Shoebox Christmas program.
“Our Shoebox Christmas program is 100 percent driven by volunteers who work with us year-round. As soon as we finish delivering the last boxes at the end of the holiday season, we begin to prepare for the following year,” said Seafarers’ House Executive Director Lesley Warrick. “This grant will provide us with a kick start and help us continue to put smiles on the faces of those mariners who may not get to spend the holidays with their loved ones.”
The Florida Legislature and Broward College, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board, allocated funding to 42 different community service organizations to develop and complete service projects.
"We are committed to fostering volunteerism and community service in our students, staff, and faculty," said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. "Our partnership with the MLK Advisory Board offers excellent projects and solidify our ongoing relationship with our community."
