Frequently Asked Questions
What volunteer opportunities are available now?
All of our listed opportunities are available on an ongoing basis. To participate, submit a completed volunteer application. Our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you and discuss the best match for you.
Can volunteers earn Community Service hours?
Student volunteers must be at least 15 years old, have the permission of their legal guardian to volunteer, and are asked to submit a completed pre-service character reference. For all volunteers wishing to earn community service hours, we track your hours of service with you and assist in the submission of appropriate paperwork to your school or other agencies.
What days and hours can volunteers work?
Volunteers are scheduled to work in particular areas of the agency at times that match the needs of the agency with the availability of the volunteer.
How can I help if I cannot physically come to Seafarers’ House?
Help us by organizing donations of: cookies, coffee, clothing, school supplies and hygiene items for distribution among mariners who visit Seafarers' House. Schools and civic groups can organize used cell phone collection drives. Hours may also be earned by becoming involved in our Shoebox Christmas drive. Wrapping and filling boxes at home will earn service hours for students. Please contact us for questions about this.
Arts and crafts groups can knit warm scarves and caps for seafarers venturing into cold climates. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator to get more ideas or visit the Service Projects section of our website.
